About Us
How can I eliminate rusty water from my home supply? Run your cold water until it clears completely. Why is my water pressure so low? First check and clean all sink strainers and screens. If this doesn't resolve the issue, contact us so Water & Sewer Payment can investigate further.
How can I prevent frozen pipes? Insulate exposed pipes, seal drafts around your home, or wrap pipes with appropriate heat tape. Running water at a slow trickle can prevent freezing, though this will increase your utility bills.
Is Marblehead water hard or soft? Our municipal water is naturally soft.
What causes cloudy water? This is typically due to air bubbles trapped in water when temperature changes from underground to above-ground levels.
How is water quality monitored? MWRA conducts daily testing. Additionally, bi-weekly samples are collected from various locations throughout Marblehead and analyzed at MWRA's Chelsea laboratory.
How can residents protect water resources? The Massachusetts Water Resource Authority recommends minimizing harmful substances entering our water system. For eco-friendly alternatives, visit MWRA's "A Healthy Environment Starts at Home" or EPA's Water Management resources.
What are effective ways to reduce water bills? Consider installing low-water washing machines, minimizing lawn irrigation, using low-flow showerheads, and installing water-efficient toilets.
How can I help maintain storm drains? With autumn approaching, please keep catch basin covers clear of leaves and debris for everyone's benefit.
Why is my water usage higher than usual? Compare your current bill to the same period in previous years, as usage often varies seasonally. Increased usage might be due to: drier weather requiring more irrigation, new sprinkler systems, car/boat washing, pool filling, additional household members, or visitors. The most common culprit is a leaking toilet, which can waste up to 74,000 gallons over three months even with a tiny leak. Dye tablets are available at our office to help detect leaks.
Do I need water and sewer line insurance? The Marblehead Water and Sewer Commission neither endorses nor discourages such insurance. Homeowners are responsible for water lines from the curb to their home and sewer lines from the connection point to their residence. While breaks are rare, we recommend consulting your existing homeowners insurance provider before purchasing additional coverage.

What We Do: The Marblehead Water Department distributes water to approximately 8,000 metered residential and commercial customers throughout our service area. Our infrastructure includes two pump stations—one on Tedesco Street and another on Loring Avenue in Salem—that maintain optimal water pressure during peak usage periods.
Our system features two water storage facilities located at Burke's Hill (near Tioga Way) and on Village Street (close to Tower Way). All water is provided by the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA), primarily sourced from the Quabbin and Wachusett Reservoirs. Before distribution, water undergoes comprehensive treatment at the Walnut Hill facility before flowing to MWRA communities.
