Water Program Quality Assurance
Our water system undergoes regular inspections by the Department of Environmental Safety (DEP). These inspections evaluate our technical, financial, and managerial capabilities to deliver safe municipal water to our customers. To maintain the highest quality standards, our water system is operated by Massachusetts-licensed professionals who oversee daily operations.

Public Participation Opportunities
Residents interested in participating in discussions about water quality can attend Selectman meetings held on the second and fourth Mondays monthly. Meeting schedules are available on Salisbury's public TV broadcasts and the Town's website at www.salisburyma.gov.

Water Treatment Processes
Our water system implements several treatment processes to ensure safe, high-quality municipal water:

• Chlorine: Used as a disinfectant to protect against microbial contaminants
• Potassium Hydroxide: A pH adjustment chemical that makes water less corrosive
• Phosphates: A sequestering agent that manages iron and manganese while improving visual quality and corrosion protection

Source Water Protection
The Department of Environmental Protection has prepared a Source Water Assessment Program (SWAP) Report for our water supply sources. This report analyzes the vulnerability of public water supplies and helps establish protective measures. The DEP and EPA regulate contaminant limits in public water systems, while FDA and Massachusetts DPH regulate bottled water standards.

Health Information for Vulnerable Populations
Some individuals may be more susceptible to contaminants in municipal water than the general population. Immunocompromised individuals, cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS, some elderly individuals, and infants may face increased health risks. These individuals should consult healthcare providers regarding their municipal water consumption.

Lead Awareness
Elevated lead levels can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead in water primarily comes from service lines and home plumbing materials. Salisbury Water Department is responsible for providing high-quality water but cannot control materials used in plumbing components. To minimize potential lead exposure, flush your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking if it has been sitting for several hours.

Radon Information
Radon is a radioactive gas found throughout the U.S. that can enter homes through foundation cracks or from tap water during household activities. Compared to soil-based radon, water-based radon typically contributes less to indoor air. However, radon is a known carcinogen that can increase risks of lung cancer when inhaled and stomach cancer when ingested through water. Home testing is recommended if you're concerned about radon levels.

Sodium Advisory
Individuals with hypertension, kidney failure, or congestive heart failure should be aware of sodium levels in their water and consult with healthcare providers about appropriate management strategies.
