Melrose Water Department (MWRA) Municipal Water Report Info

Melrose's Municipal Water Quality comes from the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA). The water originates in the Quabbin and Wachusett Reservoirs in central Massachusetts and undergoes treatment at the John Carroll Water Treatment Facility in Marlborough. The Quabbin Reservoir is recognized as one of the purest water sources nationwide.

Information About Lead
MWRA water contains no lead when it leaves the reservoirs. The MWRA and local pipes delivering water to our community are primarily made of iron and steel, which don't contribute lead to the water. However, lead can enter tap water through home or business pipes with lead service lines, lead solder in plumbing, and certain metal fixtures.

Corrosion can introduce lead into tap water, especially when water sits in pipes for extended periods. To check if you have a lead service line and learn about replacement options, please contact Scott Dixon at the Melrose Engineering Division at 781-979-4172.

Recommendations for Safe Water:

  • Always flush your tap until the water feels cold before using it
  • Never use hot tap water for drinking or cooking, especially when preparing baby formula
  • Never boil water to remove lead - this can actually increase lead concentration
  • Inspect your plumbing to ensure it's not introducing lead into your water

Why might the City turn off my water?

  1. Emergency water leak or damaged water main: To perform necessary repairs, water service may be temporarily suspended to multiple households without prior notice.
  2. Non-payment of utility bill: The Finance Department may discontinue service for overdue payments. To restore service, contact Customer Service at (623) 773-7160.
  3. Scheduled water leak repair: A notification flyer will be left at your door advising when water will be shut off for maintenance.

What causes low water pressure?
In most areas served by the City, water pressure typically ranges between 50-80 psi. During peak demand periods, pressure may drop to around 40 psi, which remains adequate for most uses. To help maintain consistent system pressure, consider scheduling high-volume activities like lawn watering, pool filling, and car washing during off-peak hours.

Why is my water cloudy?
Typically, milky or cloudy water results from air in the distribution system. The cloudiness consists of millions of tiny air bubbles that disappear within 2-3 minutes as they rise to the surface, after which the water becomes clear.

Why is my water brown?
This may occur following water leak repairs or hydrant flushing in your area. Disturbed sediment in water mains causes the brownish coloration. Though unappealing, this discolored water poses no health concerns and can be cleared by running your tap for several minutes until the water runs clear.

Why does my water taste and smell unusual sometimes?
Harmless unpleasant tastes or odors may stem from naturally occurring algae in water sources. Some odors may persist even after treatment and filtration. Chlorine used for disinfection can also create a distinctive taste and smell. Other causes include bacteria growth in rarely-used water heaters or internal anode corrosion.
