About Us
The Harwich Water Department completed several key infrastructure improvements recently. In May, they activated the Lothrop Avenue pumping station and tank. They also implemented a new Supervisory & Data Acquisition (SCADA) system for improved monitoring.
The department performed essential maintenance by cleaning and redeveloping three wells in the Chatham Road wellfield, including replacing pumps and vehicles. At Well 6, they upgraded from a less reliable submersible pump to a vertical turbine pump system. Preparatory work was completed in Harwich Port for upcoming 2" water main replacements.
Water quality improvements included implementing a uni-directional flushing program throughout the distribution network. Facility enhancements featured replacing wooden trim with PVC board, upgrading to LED lighting, installing stainless steel enclosures to replace deteriorating fiberglass ones, and replacing the RTU storage shed at the Rt. 39 tank.
The department also pressure washed and treated both elevated storage tanks with anti-fungal coating. They installed mobile radio systems in all vehicles and renovated "Building C" at the Chatham Road Wellfield to provide indoor storage for waterworks materials and create a workshop space.
A chemical upgrade switched from Sodium Hydroxide to more stable Potassium Hydroxide for pH adjustment, which handles temperature fluctuations better without freezing. Two fleet vehicles were replaced, and a program to replace all large meters (larger than 1 ½") was implemented. Engineering began for water main improvements on Lower County Road.
The Monomoy Lens is the second largest of six groundwater mounds in the aquifer system. This lens provides generally excellent municipal water from its porous sand and gravel deposits. The water is naturally "soft" due to low calcium and magnesium levels, though municipal supplies are treated to neutralize pH. Iron and manganese naturally occur and may cause staining, odor or taste issues. Coastal areas might experience elevated sodium chloride from salt spray or saltwater intrusion.
To ensure tap water safety, MassDEP and US EPA establish regulations limiting certain contaminants in public water systems. FDA and Massachusetts DPH set similar limits for bottled water. All municipal water, including bottled varieties, can reasonably be expected to contain at least trace amounts of some contaminants, though this doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk.
Some individuals may be more vulnerable to contaminants than the general population. Those with compromised immune systems—cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune disorders, some elderly individuals, and some infants—should seek advice from healthcare providers about municipal water consumption.

The Harwich Water Department oversees all consumable water services in the area, handling everything from meter reading and billing to infrastructure maintenance of water mains, tanks, and individual meters. Daily operations are managed by the Water Superintendent, appointed by the Board of Water Commissioners, who meet at 7:00 a.m. on the first and third Thursday monthly unless otherwise announced.
Harwich's groundwater supplies represent a finite resource. The department draws water from the Monomoy Lens aquifer. The town has high-yield aquifers, similar to neighboring communities. In 1977, the District temporarily lost 40% of its supply due to chemical contamination affecting two wells. While site cleanup and treatment have allowed these sources to return to service, this incident highlighted the critical importance of ongoing source protection and conservation efforts.
The town receives its water from eleven rock-filled wells and one rounded wellfield located throughout South, East, and North Harwich, all drawing from the Monomoy Lens Aquifer. The Main Station Well and Stations One through Four are situated behind the department's main office on Chatham Road. Stations Five, Six, and Seven are located off Depot Road in South Harwich beside the bike path. East Harwich hosts Stations Eight, Nine, and Eleven (off Bay Road and Pleasant Bay Road respectively), while Station Ten serves North Harwich from North Westgate Road on the Brewster town line.
Due to local geological conditions, certain wells naturally provide better water quality than others. When storage capacity meets demand, the department can optimize water quality through selective well operation. However, as demand increases, all wells must operate, including those that may produce water with taste or odor characteristics some customers find less appealing.
The department's infrastructure (tanks, pipes, pumps) is designed to meet peak demand periods. By reducing peak usage through conservation efforts, the overall cost of water service delivery can be significantly reduced.
