System Overview: MWRA infrastructure spans more than 800 square miles from Chicopee Valley to Boston Harbor. The water system includes over 200 distinct facilities, featuring the John J. Carroll Water Treatment Plant (405 million gallons daily capacity), the William A. Brutsch Water Treatment Facility (16 mgd capacity), 11 pump stations, and 14 storage tanks. The transmission network consists of 105 miles of active tunnels and aqueducts plus 39 miles of backup water tunnels.

The wastewater system comprises 65 facilities, including the Deer Island Treatment Plant (1.27 billion gallons daily capacity) and Clinton Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant (12 million gallons daily). Additionally, there are 13 pumping stations, a screen house, four remote headworks, four Combined Sewer Overflow facilities, and two CSO storage facilities.

Since 1985, MWRA has invested over $6 billion in essential new infrastructure. Beyond Boston Harbor cleanup and water system modernization, MWRA maintains extensive water and sewer pipelines, implementing proactive maintenance programs to prevent infrastructure deterioration.
