Chatham, Massachusetts sits at the southeast tip of Cape Cod, positioned at what would be considered the elbow if viewing the Cape as a bent arm. The town is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the east, Nantucket Sound to the south, and Pleasant Bay to the north. Harwich is the only adjacent town, located at both the northern and western borders.
The area features distinctive geographical elements including wooded uplands, extensive beaches, harbors, estuaries, and both salt and freshwater lakes. These landscape features were formed during the last Ice Age, creating ridges, hills, outwash plains, and depressions that formed lakes. Rising sea levels have transformed some freshwater lakes into saltwater bodies over time.
Strong Island in Pleasant Bay marks Chatham's northern boundary, while Morris and Stage Islands define the southern developed areas. Red River forms the western boundary and Muddy Creek (also called Monomoy River) defines the northwestern edge. The highest elevation in town is "Great Height" at 131 feet, which has historically served as a landmark for offshore vessels.
In 1606, Samuel de Champlain became the first European known to explore the area, encountering the Monomoyick tribe of approximately 500-600 indigenous people. The native population maintained established farms complemented by hunting and fishing practices. The geography Champlain documented remains recognizable today, as do the varieties of plants, fish, shellfish, and waterfowl he described.
European settlement began around 1656 when William Nickerson, an English exile working as a surveyor and weaver in Yarmouth, made the first land purchase from Sachem Mattaquason of the Monomoyicks. After legal struggles with the Plymouth General Court, Nickerson eventually secured ownership of most of present-day Chatham, except for lands east of Old Harbor Road reserved for the Monomoyicks.
