The City of Haverhill, nestled in northeastern Massachusetts along the Merrimack River, stands as one of the state's most historic communities. Located in northern Essex County, it borders Methuen to the west, Groveland and Boxford to the south, West Newbury to the east, and New Hampshire to the north. Spanning approximately 36 square miles, Haverhill features diverse landscapes from rural agricultural zones to urban districts, including its historic industrial center.
Founded in 1640 as Pentucket, Haverhill was officially incorporated as a city in 1870. Though initially established as farmland, the region evolved into a significant industrial hub through the development of saw and grist mills in the late 17th century, followed by tanneries and shipyards in the early 18th century. Shoe manufacturing became its dominant industry for many decades, and the city thrived industrially until the Great Depression of the 1930s. Today, computer technology and research industries flourish within Haverhill's seven industrial parks, commercial districts, and revitalized central business area.
Residents enjoy numerous recreational opportunities including four 18-hole golf courses, a ski area, two equestrian academies, a public skating rink, and a sailing program. The Merrimack River winds through the city, offering walking, running, birdwatching, and boating activities. Haverhill proudly invites visitors to observe its growing bald eagle population along the Merrimack River.
