The Town of Tisbury's history dates back to July 8, 1671, when Governor General Francis Lovelace of New York authorized its settlement during King James's reign. Initially encompassing present-day Tisbury and West Tisbury, the town holds significant historical value.
Tisbury's town seal features the quitrent paid under the original charter: "Six barrels of marketable codfish" distributed among Edgartown, Tisbury, and the Manor of Tisbury as acknowledgment of the Duke of York's authority. The seal also displays "Takemmy," the Native American name for the island.
By 1673, settlers became dissatisfied with Governor Mayhew's administration and requested changes from New York's new governor. Shortly thereafter, the island was annexed to Massachusetts by England's new rulers, William and Mary.
What's now known as Tisbury was originally called Holmes Hole. By 1850, it had developed into a thriving community thanks to harbor facilities capable of servicing large vessels, including marine railways, a sail-loft, ship-chandleries, and two boatyards on Lagoon Pond. In 1892, legislative action divided old Tisbury into two separate towns: Tisbury and West Tisbury.
