Mid-Dakota Rural Water
About Us
Last year, Mid-Dakota Rural Water System monitored water quality for potential contaminants. This report offers a snapshot of the water quality that Mid-Dakota delivered during that period. We've included information about the water source, its contents, and how it compares to EPA and state standards.
We're committed to transparency because informed consumers are our greatest allies. Our water supply serves over 6,023 customer accounts, representing a population exceeding 31,000, with an average daily distribution of 5,189,000 gallons.
Our water comes from the Oahe Dam on the Missouri River, a surface water source. We have completed our Source Water Protection plan. State authorities have conducted an assessment of our source water and determined that the Mid-Dakota Rural Water public water supply system has a medium susceptibility rating.

Many central South Dakota residents faced water problems that were either costly to fix or impossible to remedy. Responding to these challenges, the local water development board, initially Cendak Water Development District (later Mid-Dakota Water Development District), investigated establishing a rural water system similar to WEB Rural Water System to the north.
The board held community hearings throughout the area and discovered substantial interest. A steering committee formed to collect intent fees for a feasibility study conducted by engineering firm Dewild Grant Reckert and Associates from Rock Rapids, IA. An interim board (Susan Hargens from Orient; Earl and Marilou Briggs from Pierre; and Duane Aymar from Miller) established the corporation, signing incorporation articles in December 1987.
They then formed an eleven-member board to oversee the new Mid-Dakota Rural Water System, Inc. Board members included Chairwoman Susan Hargens (Orient), Vice-Chairman Eugene Warriner (Blunt), Secretary/Treasurer Warren Porter (Highmore), and directors from communities across the region.
The project expanded to include Potter, Buffalo, Aurora, Sanborn, Jerauld counties, and part of Kingsbury County, covering approximately 7,000 square miles—roughly the size of New Jersey. Construction began with the Mid-Dakota intake in September 1994, and the water treatment plant commenced operations in March 1995.
