In 2017, the Joplin Health Department prioritized completing projects from the previous year's Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) as part of the Community Health Needs Assessment. Some key accomplishments are highlighted below.

Opioid Crisis Response
In October 2017, the Joplin Health Department was tasked by the Missouri State Health Department to host a Missouri Opioid Crisis Summit. Working with One Joplin and representatives from local healthcare providers, the summit brought together over 400 attendees to address the regional impact of the opioid crisis. While Missouri hadn't implemented a state-wide Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP), the City of Joplin adopted a local ordinance in late 2017 that helps prevent prescription drug abuse by allowing healthcare providers access to patient prescription histories.

Eat Smart in Parks Initiative
The department collaborated with Joplin Parks and Recreation to implement the Eat Smart in Parks (ESIP) program, which promotes healthy food options in community recreational areas. After successful testing at Schifferdecker Pool, healthy concession options were added for the remainder of the season and upcoming year.

Emergency Preparedness
The Joplin Health Department actively partners with emergency response agencies through the Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC), Jasper/Joplin Emergency Medical Coalition, and the Jasper County Community Organizations Active in Disasters (COAD). In March, the department participated in "Operation 1918," a four-day outbreak influenza exercise with multiple agencies and Freeman Hospital.

Women, Infant, & Children (WIC) Services
The WIC program continues to provide essential nutrition services to pregnant women, new mothers, infants, and children up to age six based on health risk and income eligibility. Despite a nationwide decline in caseload, the local program maintains strong breastfeeding support with four staff certified as International Board Certified Lactation Consultants. Missouri WIC has helped establish 361 breastfeeding-friendly worksites impacting over 134,000 employees, with two new sites added in Joplin during 2017.

Missouri American - Joplin Municipal Water Report Info

Joplin is a vibrant city located in southern Jasper County and northern Newton County in southwestern Missouri. With a population of 50,150 according to the 2010 census, Joplin stands as the largest city in Jasper County, though it isn't the county seat. The Metropolitan Statistical Area surrounding Joplin had approximately 175,518 residents in 2010.

Despite common belief, Joplin wasn't named for jazz composer Scott Joplin (who lived in Sedalia, Missouri), but rather for Reverend Harris Joplin, an early pioneer who established the area's first Methodist congregation. The city was founded in 1873 and experienced significant growth from zinc mining operations, though development slowed after World War II when mineral prices fell.

Joplin gained recognition as a landmark along the historic Route 66, even earning mention in Bobby Troup's famous song about the iconic highway.
