About Us
Mobile Area Water and Sewer System (MAWSS) proudly presents our 2017 Municipal Water Quality Report. This annually required document, mandated by the federal Safe Drinking Water Act, confirms that our water meets or exceeds all state and federal safety standards. It provides comprehensive information about water quality and testing results from hundreds of samples collected throughout our service area. These regular tests ensure your tap water remains safe for consumption.
A reliable, safe, and affordable water supply contributes significantly to our community's health, economic well-being, and quality of life. MAWSS Water Treatment Plants received recognition for operational excellence in 2017. The E. M. Stickney Water Treatment Plant earned an Award of Excellence from the Alabama Water Pollution and Control Association based on performance, water quality, record keeping, appearance, and safety.
Additionally, MAWSS H.E. Myers Water Treatment Plant was designated as an Enhanced Plant by Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM). This recognition highlights facilities that consistently maintain treatment standards beyond those required by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and ADEM, providing enhanced public health protection.
Water Source: MAWSS draws water from Converse Reservoir (Big Creek Lake), which is fed by springs, streams, and rainfall within its watershed. The reservoir covers 3,600 acres, with its watershed spanning 103 square miles entirely within Mobile County. MAWSS has completed the required source water assessment of the reservoir as mandated by EPA and ADEM.
Contaminant Sources: As water moves across land or underground, it can pick up various substances including:
- Microbial contaminants (viruses, bacteria) from septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
- Inorganic contaminants (salts, metals) that occur naturally or result from stormwater runoff or agricultural activities
- Pesticides and herbicides from various sources including agriculture, stormwater runoff, and residential uses
- Organic chemical contaminants, including synthetic and volatile organic compounds from gas stations, stormwater runoff, and septic systems
EPA Advisory: The EPA notes that all drinking water, including bottled water, may reasonably contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, contact the Environmental Protection Agency's Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).
Lead Information: Elevated lead levels can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead in drinking water primarily comes from materials and components in service lines and home plumbing. MAWSS is responsible for providing high-quality water but cannot control the materials used in plumbing components. If your water has been sitting for several hours, minimize potential lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. If concerned about lead in your water, consider having it tested. Information about lead in water, testing methods, and steps to minimize exposure is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791), http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead or www.mawss.com.
Health Advisory: Some individuals may be more vulnerable to contaminants than the general population. Immunocompromised persons, such as those undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune disorders, some elderly individuals, and infants may face increased infection risks. These individuals should seek advice about drinking water from their healthcare providers. EPA/CDC guidelines on appropriate means to reduce infection risk from Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).

Mobile Area Water and Sewer Municipal Water Company and EPAMobile Area Water and Sewer Municipal Water Report Information
The Mobile Water and Sewer System was established on October 1, 1952, when the Board of Water and Sewer Commissioners entered into an agreement with the City of Mobile to acquire the water and sanitary sewer systems on behalf of the city. Raw water was obtained from the City Water Works Board from 1952 to 1968. The two Boards merged on January 1, 1968, with the Board of Water and Sewer Commissioners taking control of the raw water system.
Today, water is transported from the 3,600-acre lake and pumping station through pipelines to two reservoirs, where it's distributed for either residential or industrial use. These reservoirs are situated at an elevation of 220 feet, allowing industrial water to flow by gravity to facilities at approximately 25 feet elevation. Pumps at Big Creek Lake supply both treated water to Mobile residents and untreated water to nearby industrial operations.
