Water Conservation Tips
You can actively participate in water conservation while reducing your utility bills by monitoring your household water usage and finding ways to minimize consumption. Simple changes can make a big difference:
- Load your dishwasher completely before running - each cycle uses 15 gallons regardless of how many dishes are inside
- Turn the faucet off while brushing your teeth to save gallons daily
- Check all household faucets for leaks - even a slow drip wastes 15-20 gallons per day
- Inspect toilets for hidden leaks using food coloring in the tank - leaking toilets can waste up to 100 gallons daily
- Use your water meter to detect concealed leaks by turning off all water sources and checking if the meter moves after 15 minutes
Water Supply Information
During October 2018, the Chadwick River Filter Plant experienced a control system failure that kept it offline through December. The failed equipment was replaced with upgraded components to prevent future issues. During this period, the town relied solely on the Delaware Aqueduct Tap facility. The Chadwick Lake Filter Plant has since returned to full operational status.
Understanding Your Water Sources
The town utilizes two primary water sources: Chadwick Lake Reservoir and the NYC Department of Environmental Protection's Delaware Aqueduct. The Chadwick River Filter Plant can process 3.2 million gallons daily, while the Delaware Aqueduct Facility can supply 6 million gallons daily. A new filtration plant for the Delaware source began operation in November 2013.
Potential Contaminants in Water
Municipal water sources (including both tap and bottled water) come from rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land or through ground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and can pick up substances from animal or human activities. Contaminants potentially present in source water include: Microbial Contaminants, Inorganic Contaminants, Pesticides and Herbicides, Organic Chemical Contaminants, and Radioactive Contaminants.
