North Nelson Water District Municipal Water Company and CDCCommon Questions About Your Water Service
What is included when I pay for a new water tap?
Residential taps typically include a 5/8" x ¾" meter, a backflow prevention valve, a utility-only cut-off valve, a pressure regulator, and a customer cut-off valve. The pressure regulator and customer valve are on the customer side and carry a one-year warranty. The customer valve is for emergency use and is typically a quarter-turn ball valve located in either separate circular containers or a single rectangular box near the meter.
How long until my tap is installed after payment?
Standard residential taps (5/8" x ¾") are typically installed within ten (10) business days after payment. Before digging begins, we must submit an SC811 notice ticket. Utilities have 72 hours (three business days) to locate and mark their infrastructure in the excavation area. Weather conditions and other factors may affect this timeline. For emergency situations, please notify us when submitting your application.
How is my water meter read?
North Nelson Water District employs a fixed-based meter reading system called FlexNet. Strategically placed antennas throughout the county automatically collect and transmit hourly readings to our central office database every six hours.
What typically causes high water bills?
The most common cause is leaking toilet valves. Even minor toilet leaks can waste over 6,000 gallons monthly. These leaks can be difficult to detect and often stem from faulty flapper valves, seats, ballcock valves, flow arms, or overflow tubes. To check for toilet leaks, add a few drops of food coloring to the tank, wait 10-15 minutes, and see if color appears in the bowl.
Can I receive an adjustment for a leak?
Customers are eligible for one leak adjustment every twelve months, but only after the leak has been repaired. The adjustment calculation considers your previous five months of billing history plus the month the leak occurred, divided by six to determine your adjusted payment amount.
