How do I read my water bill?

Your water bill contains several important sections:

  • Remittance Stub - Include this portion with your payment
  • Account Number - Your unique identifier for the service area
  • Due Date - When payment must be received
  • Amount Due - Total amount including any previous balances
  • Reading Period - Timeframe covered by this bill
  • Usage - The difference between previous and current meter readings

How is the amount of my water bill determined?

Your bill consists of two main components:

  • Standard Meter Fee (STD) - Based on your water meter size
  • Usage Rate (USG) - Based on your actual water consumption

Why does my bill differ from my neighbor's?

Even with similar home sizes, household habits can significantly impact water usage. Factors include laundry frequency, dishwashing habits, bathing preferences, and water pressure differences. Checking for leaks is also recommended if your bill seems unusually high.

How hard is our water and what can I do about stains?

Shelbyville's water is considered very hard due to naturally occurring minerals. This hardness begins at 180 parts per million (ppm) of calcium carbonate, or 10.5 grains per gallon. For removing white or light brown spots on fixtures caused by calcium deposits, products like C.L.R. (Calcium Lime Rust) are recommended.

Is there fluoride in our water?

Yes. We maintain approximately 1 part per million (ppm) fluoride in our treated water to help prevent tooth decay. The allowable range for fluoride is between 0.8 ppm and 1.2 ppm.
