Louisville Water's Annual Water Quality Report provides essential information about your tap water - Louisville pure tap®. Since 1860, Louisville Water has delivered safe, high-quality water to its customers. Today, Louisville Water serves as a vital resource for the region, supplying water to nearly one million residents across Louisville Metro and portions of Bullitt, Hardin, Nelson, Oldham, Shelby, and Spencer counties.

Though Louisville's water contains no lead when leaving treatment facilities, there remains a risk of particles being picked up as water travels through pipes into homes. Louisville Water has implemented a comprehensive program to replace all known lead service lines (approximately 5,500) by 2020. When replacing their lines, they also inspect customers' private service lines and offer financial assistance if lead service lines are discovered.

Louisville Water successfully met all water quality requirements for the Lead and Copper Rule (LCR) in 2017, with levels well below the EPA's Action Level. Their lead program is considered an industry model for managing water quality, replacing lead service lines, and educating consumers.

The EPA establishes regulations that limit contaminant levels in public water systems, while FDA regulations set limits for bottled water. All drinking water, including bottled water, may contain small amounts of contaminants, which doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk.

Water sources (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land or underground, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and can pick up substances from animal or human activity.

Potential contaminants in source water include:

• Microbial contaminants like viruses and bacteria from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
• Inorganic contaminants such as salts and metals, occurring naturally or resulting from urban runoff, industrial wastewater, oil/gas production, mining, or farming
• Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban runoff, and residential uses
• Organic chemical contaminants including synthetic and volatile organic chemicals from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, urban runoff, and septic systems
• Radioactive contaminants that occur naturally or result from oil/gas production and mining

Some individuals may be more vulnerable to water contaminants than the general population. Immuno-compromised persons, such as cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, HIV/AIDS patients, elderly individuals, and infants should seek advice from healthcare providers regarding drinking water.

The Ohio River serves as the source for your drinking water. Louisville Water operates both a surface water treatment plant and a groundwater treatment plant with intakes on the Ohio River. In 2003, the Kentucky Division of Water approved a Source Water Assessment and Protection Plan for Jefferson County, which identified leaks of hazardous materials on the Ohio River and permitted discharges from sanitary sewers as the highest contamination risks.
