FAQ about Automated Collection

1. How frequently will my materials be collected?

   Refuse will continue to be collected weekly. Recycled items will be collected every other week on the same day as your refuse pickup.

2. Why do we use carts and automated collection?

   Automated collection enhances efficiency and minimizes worker injuries. The new trucks can service more households daily than the previous manual system, requiring fewer vehicles and staff, which generates annual taxpayer savings.

3. What should I do with my old refuse containers?

   We encourage repurposing your old refuse containers for projects like rain barrels, compost bins, or pet waste digesters. They also make excellent storage for birdseed, pet food, or garage items.

   If you wish to dispose of plastic or metal refuse cans, please do NOT place them in your recycling cart. Rinse them and bring them to the drop-off site at 100 Sixth Avenue, open year-round:

   • Tuesdays: 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
   • Thursdays: 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
   • Saturdays: 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
4. What items will no longer be collected curbside?

   Recycling items that will NOT be collected include used motor oil and lead-acid (car) batteries. These items require careful handling and must be brought to our drop-off center at 100 Sixth Avenue. If you cannot bring them in, contact the Streets Department at 715-346-1537.

5. What if my trash doesn't fit in the cart?

   The Streets Department will NOT collect regular refuse that doesn't fit in your brown refuse cart with the lid closed. You have several options:

   • Hold the material until the following week
   • Ask a neighbor if you may place extra items in their cart
   • Pay for additional cart(s) by calling 715-346-1537

   BULK ITEMS: Items too large for your brown refuse cart require a special pick-up tag, available at the City Treasurer's Office (1515 Strongs Avenue). Call 346-1573 for details.
