About Us
Winchester Municipal Utilities (WMU) works diligently to deliver exceptional water, sewage, and solid waste services to every customer. This Water Quality Report provides vital information about your water supply.
WMU draws its raw water from two surface sources: the Kentucky River (Pool 10), which supplied 85% of water in 2017, and the Carroll E. Ecton Reservoir, which provided the remaining 15%. In 2017, WMU treated over 1.6 billion gallons of water from these sources.
The Kentucky River is most susceptible to agricultural runoff containing pesticides, nutrients, and silt. Meanwhile, the Carroll E. Ecton Reservoir faces risks from urban stormwater runoff, which may include metals, nutrients, and yard waste. Commercial and construction runoff can introduce silts, synthetic chemicals, and metals into our water system.
WMU maintains a rigorous water sampling protocol and takes pride in ensuring the community receives pure water at all times. Our water treatment plant operates 24/7/365 with a rated capacity of 6.0 million gallons daily. The treatment process involves flocculation, sedimentation, high-rate filtration, and disinfection.
We provide water service to 11,802 direct customers and, through water resale, to 2,473 customers of East Clark County Water District and 189 customers of Kentucky American Water Company – serving a total of 14,464 water customers in Clark County.
WMU regularly monitors for contaminants in accordance with Federal and State regulations. Our testing includes checks for 77 major standards, 16 secondary standards, and various other requirements, with results consistently within acceptable levels.
Regarding lead in water: elevated levels can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead primarily comes from materials in service lines and home plumbing. While WMU provides high-quality water, we cannot control materials used in plumbing components. To reduce potential lead exposure, flush your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking if it has been sitting for several hours.
