About Us
Danville operates the only public water treatment facility in Boyle County, processing surface water from Herrington Lake. Activities occurring upstream can significantly impact your water quality, affecting both public health and treatment costs.
An assessment by the Kentucky Division of Water indicates Danville's water supply has moderate susceptibility to contamination, with several high-concern areas. Herrington Lake has been classified as impaired, while forested and agricultural zones within the watershed present risks of runoff and agricultural chemical contamination.
Additional concerns include power line corridors with potential herbicide application, recreational areas like golf courses that may use chemicals, major transportation routes, and numerous residential septic systems throughout the watershed. EPA regulations limit contaminant levels in public water systems, while FDA regulations establish similar protections for bottled water. Elevated lead levels can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead typically comes from service lines and home plumbing materials. While Danville City Water Works provides quality water, it cannot control materials used in household plumbing. The City of Danville Municipal Utilities consists of five specialized divisions, each responsible for a different aspect of the overall utility system.
The Stormwater Utility, established January 1, 2008, maintains and enhances Danville's stormwater infrastructure. Their responsibilities include maintaining existing systems (inlets, pipes, culverts, detention basins), ensuring compliance with State Division of Water regulations, and overseeing capital improvement projects.
The Water Treatment Plant, originally constructed in 1924, processes water pumped from Herrington Lake via a pump station near Gwinn Island Marina built in 1935. Through multiple upgrades, the facility now has a treatment capacity of 10 million gallons daily. When raw water reaches the plant, chemicals are added in the flash mix stage to assist with coagulation, corrosion control, organic reduction, and dental health promotion. The water then moves through flocculators that decrease in velocity, allowing particles to bind together and settle. Finally, nine high-rate dual media filters can process up to 8 million gallons per day.
The Water Distribution System, dating to the late 1800s, comprises approximately 265 miles of water mains serving over 11,200 customers and four water districts. Eleven full-time employees handle maintenance, connections, meter reading, and service requests. The department is implementing an automated meter reading (AMR) system with new meters and transmitters that send readings via radio signal to vehicle-mounted receivers, improving efficiency and accuracy.
The Wastewater Rehabilitation and Collection Department maintains sewer lines and lift stations for Danville, Perryville, and Junction City. Activities include rodding and flushing lines, conducting inspections, addressing identified issues, and maintaining the pump stations that direct sewage to treatment facilities.
The Wastewater Filtration Department operates the treatment plant where sanitary wastewater is processed to separate clean water for environmental release from treatment byproducts that can be used as fertilizer on city-owned agricultural land.
