About Us
Richmond's water originates from the Kentucky Water surface source. As water travels across land or through ground, it naturally dissolves minerals and can pick up contaminants from animal or human activities.
Several types of contaminants may be present in untreated source water, including:
- Biological contaminants like viruses and bacteria from sewage treatment facilities, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
- Inorganic contaminants such as salts and metals that occur naturally or result from urban runoff, industrial discharge, or farming
- Fertilizers and pesticides from various sources including agriculture and residential areas
- Organic chemicals from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, and septic systems
- Radioactive elements that can be naturally occurring or result from oil/gas production and mining
The EPA establishes regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems to ensure safety. The FDA sets similar standards for bottled water. While all water may contain trace amounts of some contaminants, this doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk.
A source water assessment shows Richmond's susceptibility is moderate. Forested areas comprise 3% of the land in this zone, where logging could cause soil erosion if Best Management Practices aren't followed. Row crop areas present potential risks from tillage, pesticides, and fertilizers. Two bridges, a CSX railroad segment, an active Superfund site, and other potential contaminant sources exist within the area of influence.
The complete assessment is available during regular business hours at the Richmond Utilities Office at 300 Hallie Irvine Street.
