The area now known as Rotterdam, New York was first settled by Dutch immigrants around 1661. The town, named after Rotterdam in The Netherlands, was officially established from a section of Schenectady on April 14, 1820. The fertile Mohawk River valley soil supported a thriving broom corn industry during the mid-1800s.
With the arrival of the Erie Canal in 1825 and later railways, several settlements developed throughout Rotterdam, including Rotterdam Junction, South Schenectady, and Pattersonville. Rotterdam became a crucial transportation hub in the Northeast, with the Erie Canal running through the entire northeastern section of town and featuring two locks.
From a frontier settlement with just 1,529 residents in 1820, Rotterdam has grown into a vibrant suburban community with over 28,000 residents. Established as a first-class town in 1942, Rotterdam adopted the seal of Old World Rotterdam along with its motto "Stronger Through Effort," which continues to guide the community's approach to future development.

How often do water bills arrive?
Water bills are issued quarterly (every three months).
Why is there a basic service charge? Can't I just pay for the water I use?
The basic service fee covers meter maintenance, water mains, and hydrants that provide fire protection. These are essential services everyone receives, regardless of water consumption volume.
My water bill seems unusually high. Is it possible I used that much water?

WATER QUALITY
Where does my water come from?
The Authority purchases water from various suppliers including the Monroe County Water Authority; cities of Ontario, Williamson, Sodus, and Rose; villages of Palmyra, Newark, Wolcott, Lyons, Red Creek and Fair Haven; and the Cayuga County Water and Sewer Authority. Sources include Lake Ontario, Canandaigua Lake, and various drilled wells.
What is the water hardness level?
Lake Ontario water has a hardness of approximately 7 grains per gallon (125 mg/L), considered moderately hard. Well sources have much higher hardness levels, around 20+ grains per gallon. When lake and well sources are combined, hardness averages around 17 grains per gallon.
Is the water fluoridated?
Yes, all water supplied by the Authority is fluoridated to one part per million, as recommended by the New York State Department of Health. Exceptions include water provided by Cayuga County Water and Sewer Authority on Ingersoll Drive and by the Village of Red Creek on Route 104A in Wolcott, which are not fluoridated.

Why might I see utility workers near my property?
Authority personnel may be in your neighborhood reading or replacing meters, conducting stakeouts, flushing hydrants, or repairing water infrastructure. All service vehicles display our logo, and staff carry identification. Feel free to ask any employee to identify themselves and explain their activities.
What do the colored flags or paint markings on my property mean?
These indicate the location of underground utilities. By law, utility companies must mark their infrastructure before any excavation work occurs nearby. Different colors represent specific utilities: blue (water), red (electric), yellow (gas), orange (communications), and green (sewer).
