The state allows reduced monitoring for certain contaminants because their concentrations typically remain stable year to year. Test results older than one year are still considered valid, though no data older than 5 years is included. When multiple samples are collected during a monitoring period, the Range of Tested Results shows the lowest and highest measurements.
Sources of tap water (both municipal and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and groundwater wells. As water travels over land or underground, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive material, and can pick up substances from animal or human activity.
Our water comes from the following groundwater sources:
- W13 - PLANT#3 GROUNDWATER
- W1 - PLANT #2 GROUNDWATER
- W11 - PLANT #1 GROUNDWATER
- WL 12 - HERB #2 GROUNDWATER
- # 6 - PLANT #2 GROUNDWATER
- W7 - PLANT #2 GROUNDWATER
- W8 - PLANT #3 GROUNDWATER

The Sikeston Board of Municipal Utilities is a City-owned utility established in 1931. It manages the electric, water, and sanitary sewer systems within the City, currently serving over 9,000 electric customers, 8,500 water customers, and 7,500 sanitary sewer customers.
Governance is provided by a four-member Board appointed by the Sikeston City Council. Current members include Brian Menz (Chairman), Tim Merideth (Vice Chairman), Bob Smith (Secretary), and Alan Keenan (Assistant Secretary).
Sikeston's electricity comes from the City-owned Sikeston Power Station, a 235-megawatt coal-fired facility on the western edge of town. Construction began in March 1978, with operations starting in September 1981. The plant not only meets Sikeston's needs but also supplies power to other Missouri communities.
Fuel is provided by Western Fuels Association, a non-profit partnership of municipal and cooperative electric utilities. The power station consumes over one million tons of low-sulfur coal annually from Wyoming's Powder River Basin.
The water system includes three treatment plants with a total daily capacity exceeding 7 million gallons. Water is drawn from eight deep wells, with average consumption of 3.5 million gallons daily and peak usage over 6 million gallons. The distribution network consists of 130 miles of water mains and 3.8 million gallons of storage capacity.
The sanitary sewer system features one orbital oxidation ditch and two contact stabilization treatment plants, providing a total design capacity of 4.4 million gallons daily. Fourteen lift stations and a lagoon facility serve the Sikeston Business, Education and Technology Park.
Sikeston BMU also maintains a 33-mile fiber optic communications backbone throughout the community, connecting all utility and city facilities on a high-speed network that also serves the public education system and many industrial customers.
According to the Energy Information Administration, Sikeston BMU's electric rates are among the lowest in Missouri compared to other utilities. The utility employs 142 dedicated staff committed to providing excellent service at the lowest possible cost—a commitment demonstrated during the devastating January 2009 ice storm, when employees worked 16-18 hour days in adverse conditions to restore service.
