Liberty Municipal Water Company and EPALiberty Municipal Water Report Info
Founded in 1822 and named for the principle Americans hold most dear, Historic Downtown Liberty, Missouri combines nostalgic charm with vibrant modern development. The first settlers arrived in 1819, attracted by excellent water supplies, well-forested hills, and proximity to the Missouri River—an early transportation route for westward expansion.
Liberty was established as Clay County's seat in 1822 and incorporated as a city in 1829, making it the second oldest incorporated town west of the Mississippi. During the 1838 Mormon conflicts, Governor Lilburn Boggs ordered Joseph Smith's arrest, and Smith was temporarily imprisoned at Liberty jail before eventually escaping to Illinois.
The city developed significant educational institutions in the late 19th century, including Liberty High School (chartered 1890) and Liberty Ladies College. In 1913, Liberty connected to Kansas City via the Interurban Rail system, with transportation links growing through the addition of State Route 10 in 1922 and its upgrade to U.S. Highway 69 in 1926.
During World War II, Liberty hosted German and Italian prisoners as part of the nationwide solution to labor shortages. The addition of Interstate 35 along portions of US 69 in the 1960s sparked new suburban growth oriented toward Kansas City. William Jewell College served as the NFL Training Camp for the Kansas City Chiefs until 1991.
