About Us
The City of Southfield, The Southeastern Oakland County Water Authority and the Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA) take pride in providing quality water to residents. The 2017 Annual Water Quality Report highlights our water sources, testing results, and essential health information. We're committed to notifying you immediately of any concerns about your water supply.
We're pleased to report that we've consistently exceeded water quality standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ). Southfield purchases water from the Southeastern Oakland County Water Authority (SOCWA) at eleven locations. SOCWA distributes GLWA water through member systems to approximately 210,000 people across a 56 square mile area.
Our water originates from the Detroit River, Lake St. Clair, Clinton River, Rouge River, and Ecorse River in the U.S., as well as portions of Canadian watersheds including the Thames River, Little River, Turkey Creek, and Sydenham watersheds. In 2004, environmental agencies conducted a source water assessment, rating the Detroit River intake as highly susceptible to potential contamination. However, all Detroit water treatment plants have historically provided effective treatment meeting safety standards.
GLWA has implemented protective measures including chemical containment, spill response protocols, and a mercury reduction program. In 2015, GLWA received a grant to develop a source water protection program for the Detroit River. This comprehensive program includes defining responsibilities of government units and water suppliers, establishing protection areas, identifying potential contaminants, and developing management strategies, contingency plans, and public education initiatives.
The Lake Huron watershed, which supplies some of our water, has been classified as having moderately low susceptibility to contaminants. The Lake Huron treatment plant has consistently provided safe, properly treated water meeting all standards. For more information about source water assessments, please contact your water department at (248)288-5150.
