GENERAL INFORMATION

Water, including bottled varieties, may contain small amounts of various contaminants. The presence of these substances doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For detailed information about potential health effects, contact the Environmental Protection Agency's Safe Water Hotline (800-426-4791).

Certain individuals may have increased vulnerability to water contaminants compared to the general population. This includes:

  • People undergoing cancer treatment
  • Organ transplant recipients
  • Individuals with HIV/AIDS or immune disorders
  • Elderly residents
  • Infants and young children

These groups should seek specific guidance from healthcare providers. EPA/CDC guidelines on reducing infection risks from Cryptosporidium and microbial contaminants are available via the Safe Drinking Water Hotline.

Elevated lead levels can pose serious health concerns, particularly for pregnant women and young children. Lead in municipal water primarily comes from service lines and household plumbing materials. STORM LAKE WATER TREATMENT PLANT provides quality water but cannot control plumbing component materials. To minimize potential lead exposure, flush your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for consumption when it has been sitting unused. For concerns about lead, consider water testing. Information about lead in water is available at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.

SOURCE WATER ASSESSMENT INFORMATION

Our water supply comes from buried sand and gravel of the Hidden Sand and Gravel aquifer. This source was determined to have some vulnerability to contamination due to aquifer characteristics and overlying materials. The wells may be susceptible to surface contaminants including leaking storage tanks, chemical spills, and fertilizer application.

Additional water is sourced from sandstone and dolomite of the Cambrian-Ordovician aquifer, which has low contamination susceptibility due to natural protection from the aquifer and overlying materials.

We also obtain water from the sandstone of the Dakota aquifer, which demonstrates low susceptibility to surface contaminants thanks to natural protective features.

Detailed assessments of all source water have been completed by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and are available from the Water Operator at 712-732-8031.

For questions about this information or to participate in decisions regarding the water system, please contact STORM LAKE WATER TREATMENT PLANT at 712-732-8031.
