About Us
Elevated lead levels in water pose serious health concerns, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead contamination primarily comes from service line materials and home plumbing components. While Toho Water Authority provides quality municipal water, they cannot control the various plumbing materials used in homes.
If your water has been sitting unused for several hours, you can reduce potential lead exposure by running your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for consumption or cooking. If concerned about lead, consider having your water tested. More information about lead in water, testing methods, and exposure reduction is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.
Municipal water sources (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land surfaces or through ground layers, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals, sometimes radioactive materials, and can pick up substances from animal presence or human activities.
