About Us
Trenton Water Works is a public community water system serving approximately 205,000 residents. The system's water is sourced from the Delaware River with an intake positioned north of the Calhoun St. Bridge. Water undergoes treatment at the TWW Filtration facility on Route 29 S before distribution through the pipeline network. Additionally, Trenton Water Works has arrangements to purchase groundwater from a neighboring system when needed.

Trenton serves as New Jersey's capital and the county seat of Mercer County. According to the 2010 United States Census, Trenton had a population of 84,913. The city is included in the Greater New York City Combined Statistical Area.
The history of Trenton dates back to at least June 3, 1719, when records mention a constable being appointed for Trenton while the area was still part of Hunterdon County. Boundaries for Trenton Township were recorded as of March 2, 1720, with a courthouse and jail constructed around that time. The Freeholders of Hunterdon County met annually in Trenton.
Trenton became New Jersey's capital on November 25, 1790, and the City of Trenton was formed within Trenton Township on November 13, 1792. Trenton Township was incorporated as one of New Jersey's initial 104 townships by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 21, 1798. Parts of the township were separated on February 22, 1834, to establish Ewing Township.
Over a 50-year period, the city underwent several annexations, absorbing South Trenton borough (April 14, 1851), portions of Nottingham Township (April 14, 1856), Chambersburg and Millham Township (both on March 30, 1888), and Wilbur borough (February 28, 1898).
The first settlement that would become Trenton was established by Quakers in 1679 in an area then known as the Falls of the Delaware, led by Mahlon Stacy from Handsworth, Sheffield, UK. Quakers faced persecution in England at this time, and North America offered an ideal opportunity for religious freedom. By 1719, the town adopted the name "Trent-towne," after William Trent, a prominent landowner who purchased much of the surrounding land from Stacy's family. This name was later shortened to "Trenton."
