Tennessee Water Utility Companies

What is the source of my water? Your water comes from groundwater and purchased surface water. We actively work to shield our water from contaminants and collaborate with the State to evaluate our water source's vulnerability to potential contamination. The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) has developed a Source Water Assessment Program (SWAP) Report for the untreated water resources serving our system.

The SWAP Report evaluates untreated water resources' susceptibility to potential contamination. To ensure safe tap water, all public water systems treat and regularly test their water. Water sources have been classified as moderately susceptible, moderately vulnerable, or slightly susceptible based on geological factors and human activities near the water supply. The Watts Bar Utility District sources were rated as moderately at risk to potential contamination.

West Knox Utility District Municipal Water Report Info

The West Knox Utility District (WKUD) was established under Title 7, Chapter 82 of the Utility District Law of Tennessee and began operations on October 18, 1954. The District's primary purpose is to "acquire, construct, improve, extend, operate and maintain a water and wastewater system."

The District serves a 70-square-mile area bordered by Knoxville to the east, Interstate Highways 40 and 75 to the south, and Anderson and Loudon counties to the north and west. Melton Hill Lake, formed by the Clinch River's impoundment at Melton Hill Dam, creates the northern and western boundaries.

Today, WKUD provides service to over 25,000 water and 20,000 wastewater customers in one of Tennessee's fastest-growing counties. A Board of Commissioners governs the District, consisting of three residents who either live in or are customers of the District. The Knox County Mayor appoints board members for four-year terms. The Board typically meets monthly on the fourth Thursday, with all meetings open to the public.
