The Bedford County Utility District initiated its natural gas system development in May 2000, with actual gas transport and distribution beginning January 3, 2001.
The District receives natural gas through its gateway station on the East Tennessee Natural Gas Company pipeline to Shelbyville, Tennessee. Currently, the system operates approximately twenty-eight (28) miles of natural gas pipeline, one (1) gateway station and two (2) regulator stations.
By December 2001, the District plans to add another eight (8) miles of pipeline. By winter 2001, the District anticipates serving approximately 300 residential customers and three (3) large commercial clients. These current facilities were funded through $1,000,000.00 and $2,000,000.00 revenue bonds via Rural Development, USDA. Additional funding of $1,500,000.00 has been secured through Rural Development, USDA revenue bonds to expand natural gas service for winter 2002.
