About Us
The Safe Municipal Water Act Amendments of 1996 were enacted to ensure your health and safety. This legislation requires municipalities to inform residents about their water quality over the previous year. This report outlines the quality of water provided to Westmont Village during 2017.
Included is information about your water source, composition, and how it measures against standards established by regulatory agencies. These standards limit the amount of contaminants allowed in your water while still being considered safe for consumption.
We're dedicated to sharing this information because informed residents help us improve. If you'd like to learn more, please join our regularly scheduled Town Board Meetings held every other Thursday at 6:00 p.m. For additional information, contact the Water Division at (630) 981-6270.
Water Source Information: Currently, your tap water comes from the City of Chicago through the DuPage Water Commission. Until 1992, water was supplied by 7 wells located within the village. The village began receiving water from the DuPage Water Commission in 1992.
Why Lake Michigan Water? As the village population increased, well water supplies declined. In December 1990, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) placed Westmont on "Restricted Status," necessitating the switch from well water to Lake Michigan water.
Water Treatment Process: The Lake Michigan water purchased from the DuPage Water Commission is pre-treated. However, chlorine is added to water entering ground storage tanks from May to September to maintain adequate residual levels for stored water.
For questions about this report or your water system, please contact Rick Cates, Public Works Supervisor, at the Westmont Public Works Water Division (630) 981-6270.
The Illinois EPA has prepared a source water assessment for Westmont Village, identifying potential contamination sources and susceptibility. The Illinois EPA considers all surface water sources of community water supply vulnerable to potential pollution. Surface water allows contaminants to migrate into intakes with only dilution as protection, requiring mandatory treatment for all Illinois surface water supplies.
Chicago's offshore intakes are positioned at distances where shoreline impacts rarely affect water quality. However, contamination risks exist during wet-weather flows and river reversals. Additionally, the intake structures may attract waterfowl, gulls and terns frequenting the Great Lakes, concentrating waste deposits at the intake and potentially reducing source water quality. Meanwhile, shoreline intakes are highly susceptible to stormwater runoff, marina activity and other coastal sources due to groundwater flow into the lake.
