About Us
The water source for the Chicago Provincial District is Lake Michigan surface water, purchased from the Village of Glenview through the Town of Wilmette. In March 2016, Chicago Suburban Area acquired Plum Creek Condominiums, transitioning their supply from groundwater to purchased Lake Michigan surface water.
Illinois EPA considers all surface water sources of public water potentially vulnerable to contamination, which necessitates mandatory treatment of all public water supplies in Illinois. This treatment process includes coagulation, sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection. Primary pollution sources in Illinois lakes include agricultural runoff, waste disposal systems, and shoreline erosion.
The IEPA has completed a water resource assessment for Wilmette Village with copies available upon request. A Great Lakes States workgroup developed a consistent protocol for assessing the Great Lakes as water sources, accommodating variability and site-specific concerns when determining source sensitivity and susceptibility.
Sensitivity refers to a water source's inherent vulnerability to contaminants based on hydrologic or geologic settings. Wilmette's intakes are positioned far enough offshore that shoreline impacts are not considered a water quality factor. However, during certain seasons, contamination potential exists from wet-weather flows from the North Shore Channel, especially when currents move northward toward Wilmette's intakes.
Correlation between Evanston's rainfall data, North Shore Channel discharge dates, and Wilmette's coliform measurements indicates these flows may impact water quality. Additionally, proximity to major shipping routes increases susceptibility to potential spills near the intakes.
Wilmette water officials actively participate in the Western Shore Water Suppliers Association, discussing water quality conditions quarterly. Lake Michigan, like all Great Lakes, has organizations working to preserve or enhance water quality. Since Illinois' Lake Michigan watershed is primarily urban, watershed protection activities focus on this usage pattern.
