About Us
What is a Water Quality Report? Illinois American Water publishes an annual document detailing your municipal water quality in accordance with state and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) regulations. This report aims to enhance understanding of water quality standards and highlight the importance of protecting water resources.
At our Belleville laboratory, we perform thousands of tests annually, monitoring water quality throughout the treatment and delivery process. In 2017, we tested for hundreds of contaminants, including those with federal and state maximum allowable levels. This overview presents last year's (2017) water quality results with details about your water composition.
Source Water Information: The West Suburban community receives surface water from Lake Michigan, purchased from Chicago through Bedford Park Village and American Lake Water Company. Illinois EPA considers all public water supply surface water sources potentially vulnerable to pollution, necessitating mandatory treatment including coagulation, sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection.
Primary pollution sources in Illinois lakes include agricultural runoff, septic systems, and shoreline erosion. The IEPA has completed a source assessment for Chicago, available upon request. Chicago has one near-shore intake vulnerable to stormwater runoff, marinas, and shoreline contamination sources. Two offshore intakes are situated at distances where shoreline impacts are unlikely to affect water quality.
Environmental Stewardship: Water is one of our most precious natural resources. Our environmental protection efforts include student education programs, community event participation, and environmental partnerships. We reach thousands of students yearly through educational initiatives, our Mobile Education Center, and STEM partnerships. We participate in watershed celebrations, river cleanup efforts, and have awarded over $195,000 to 51+ Illinois water protection projects since 2009.

The EPA sets standards for public water systems nationwide. These standards establish maximum contaminant levels for potentially harmful substances in water. The Riverdale utility company regularly tests for these contaminants and submits reports to state and federal agencies.
Water quality can vary based on source, treatment methods, and infrastructure condition. Riverdale's purchased surface water undergoes treatment to remove impurities before reaching your tap. However, residents should be aware of potential contaminants that may affect water quality and household appliances.
Regular testing helps ensure compliance with EPA standards, but some contaminants may still be present at levels below regulatory thresholds. Understanding your water quality report can help you make informed decisions about additional home water treatment options if needed.
