Belvidere Drinking Water Report Info
The first European settlers arrived in this region around 1835, establishing camp along the Kishwaukee River, which now forms the heart of Belvidere. They named their settlement Belvidere, from the Latin meaning "beautiful to view."

By the mid-to-late 1800s, Belvidere transformed into an industrial center. Commercial transportation began in 1851, the National Sewing Machine Company became the city's largest employer around 1900, and Green Giant Company established operations in 1911.

Today, major industrial employers in Belvidere include the Chrysler Corporation Belvidere Assembly Plant, General Mills, Dean Foods, Yang Feng Automotive Interiors, and Magna International. In 1912, businesswoman Sarah Jones described Belvidere saying, "You can't capture the real Belvidere with a camera—it's the spirit of the real Belvidere which I like—the spirit shown by its schools and churches and friendly business firms, and manifested in the ideals of its people." This same community spirit continues to thrive in Belvidere, connecting its rich history with new beginnings.

Illinois CDC Tap Water Info

For more information on your tap water, visit the U.S. CDC:

Belvidere Drinking Water Company and CDC

  1. Why are you implementing remote water metering? It's more efficient and less intrusive for residents. All water meters in your community can be monitored remotely via radio in just minutes.
  2. What will this cost me? Nothing. Performing our work more efficiently helps us maintain the lowest possible water rates.
  3. What's the first step in the process? We'll install a meter-reading device outside your home or business. The device measures approximately 4½ inches wide by 5½ inches tall and connects to the small TouchRead device already located outside your property.
  4. Do I need to do anything? No. Installation typically takes about 10 minutes. We don't anticipate needing access to your interior. If we discover we need to access your water meter, we'll schedule an appointment.
  5. What if I have additional questions? Please contact our Customer Service Department at 222-3460 or email us at waterworks@wdmww.com.
  6. What municipal services are included in my monthly bill? Your bill is prepared by West Des Moines Water Works and includes charges for water, sanitary sewer, stormwater management, and solid waste services.
  7. How often is my water meter read? Our staff reads approximately 1,600 meters daily. We strive to read each meter at nearly the same time monthly to ensure consistent billing periods. When we can't obtain an actual reading, we prepare an estimated bill based on your previous water consumption.
  8. What payment options are available? We offer multiple convenient payment methods: mail using the enclosed envelope, in-person at our office, after-hours drop box, online payments via echeck, AUTOPAY, credit/debit cards on our website, touchtone phone payments at (800) 272-9829 (jurisdiction code 2503), or FLEX-PAY automatic payment. Call 222-3460 for details.
  9. What can I do about a high water bill? Most increased usage results from leaking faucets or toilets. We recommend prompt repairs to prevent higher monthly bills. If you're experiencing unexplained high water usage, contact Customer Service at 222-3460. A field representative can visit your home to help identify the problem and recommend appropriate action, at no charge.
  10. Where is my water meter located? Your meter is typically located where the water pipe enters through your foundation, usually in the basement or utility room. If you can't locate it, call us at 222-3460 for assistance. West Des Moines Water Works owns the meter and handles routine maintenance, while property owners must protect it from damage and provide access to the meter and reading system.
  11. What is a curb valve used for? Curb valves control water service on/off functions. Each water service pipe requires an operable curb valve, typically located in the public right-of-way. Property owners are responsible for maintaining operable curb valves so water can be shut off in emergencies, particularly during flooding situations.
  12. What should I do about unexplained running water in the street or yard? Water main and service pipe leaks can cause serious property damage. Please report these to Customer Service at 222-3460 immediately. Other leak indicators include pressure drops, plumbing noise, or standing water in your yard.
  13. When are you open? Our regular business hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM.
  14. What if I have an emergency after hours? For after-hours emergencies, call 222-3460. Our on-call staff is available 24 hours daily to address urgent situations.
  15. Who serves on the Water Works Board of Trustees? As of February 2013, our board includes: Karen Novak Swalwell (Chair, term expires December 31, 2017), Philip J. Dorweiler (term expires December 31, 2016), Brian P. Rickert (term expires December 31, 2020), Gretchen Tegeler (term expires December 31, 2018), and Scott M. Brennan (term expires December 31, 2021).
  16. Why should I consider a separate water meter for outdoor faucets? A separate meter specifically measures water used outdoors, which is distinct from your primary indoor water usage tracking.
