About Us
Municipal water sources include rivers, lakes, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water moves across land or through soil, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and sometimes radioactive materials, while also potentially collecting substances from animal presence or human activities.
Possible contaminants in source water include:
- Microbial contaminants from sewage treatment facilities, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
- Inorganic contaminants such as salts and metals occurring naturally or from urban runoff, wastewater discharge, oil/gas production, mining, or farming
Information about specific inorganic contaminants:
- Iron: Not currently regulated by USEPA, but state-set MCLs exist for supplies serving 1,000+ people
- Manganese: Not currently federally regulated, but has state MCLs for larger water systems
- Sodium: No state/federal MCL exists, but monitoring provides information for those on sodium-restricted diets
- Arsenic: While Rockford water meets EPA standards, it contains low arsenic levels. EPA continues researching health effects of low arsenic levels, known to cause cancer at high concentrations
Additional contaminant sources include pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban runoff, and residential use; organic chemical contaminants from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, and waste systems; and radioactive contaminants occurring naturally or from resource extraction.
All water, including bottled water, reasonably contains at least small amounts of some contaminants. This doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, call the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791.
Some individuals may be more vulnerable to water contaminants than the general public. Those with compromised immune systems, cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS, some elderly individuals, and infants may face increased infection risks. These individuals should seek advice from healthcare providers regarding drinking water safety.
If present, elevated lead levels can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead primarily comes from materials in service lines and home plumbing. After water sits for several hours, you can reduce lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. For concerns about lead, consider testing your water. Information is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.
