About Us
Sources of tap water (both municipal and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels across land surfaces or through underground layers, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive materials, while potentially collecting substances from animal presence or human activities.
Potential contaminants in source water include:
- Microbial contaminants: Viruses and bacteria from sewage facilities, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife.
- Inorganic contaminants: Salts and metals occurring naturally or resulting from urban runoff, wastewater discharge, oil/gas production, mining, or farming.
- Pesticides and herbicides: Agricultural activities, urban stormwater runoff, and residential usage contribute these chemicals.
- Organic chemical contaminants: Byproducts of industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, urban runoff, and septic systems.
- Radioactive contaminants: Naturally occurring or resulting from oil/gas production and mining operations.

The western and southern wing of the structure added in the 1930s featured indoor plumbing with marble bathrooms, shower facilities, and elegant marble staircases leading to the second floor. When the Post Office outgrew this location in the 1960s, a new facility was constructed at 321 West Main Street. The former Post Office building was acquired by the City of Ottawa during Mayor Philip Bailey's administration in 1962 for $35,000.
301 West Madison Street officially became City Hall on September 13, 1965, when Mayor Dan Riordan relocated the City's administrative offices from 422 LaSalle Street, where they had shared space with the Police and Fire Departments. This move brought municipal operations back to the same block where two previous City Halls once stood—one on Madison Street's north side between Clinton and Fulton Streets (destroyed in the Great Fire of 1881) and another at 315 West Madison Street (1926-1937).
The 2002 renovation successfully blended historical elements with modern functionality, creating contemporary facilities while preserving the building's unique architectural features and historical significance.
