About Us
The Illinois EPA considers surface water supplies particularly vulnerable to contamination issues. Unlike groundwater, surface water lacks natural filtration, relying solely on dilution to reduce contaminant concentrations. This vulnerability necessitates mandatory treatment for all surface water sources throughout Illinois.
A specialized Great Lakes States workgroup developed protocols for evaluating water quality in these unique ecosystems. Their approach balances consistency with flexibility, accounting for the variable nature of these massive freshwater resources when determining source sensitivity and contamination susceptibility.
For Wilmette's water supply, sensitivity analysis shows the intake locations are positioned sufficiently offshore to minimize direct shoreline impacts. However, seasonal risks exist when wet-weather discharges from the North Shore Channel flow northerly, potentially compromising water quality. Data correlation between Evanston rainfall measurements, channel discharge timing, and Wilmette's coliform testing demonstrates this relationship clearly.
The proximity to major shipping lanes presents additional contamination risks should spills occur near intake points. Wilmette water officials actively participate in the West Shore Water Producers Association, where coordination regarding water quality incidents (spills, tanker leaks, invasive species) occurs during quarterly meetings.
To ensure tap water safety, EPA regulations limit contaminant levels in public water systems, similar to FDA requirements for bottled water. Water sources (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land or underground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive materials, while also potentially collecting substances from animal presence or human activity.

The Wilmette Historical Museum was established by the Village of Wilmette in 1951 and is jointly operated by the Village and the Wilmette Historical Society, a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to promoting local history. The Museum's extensive collections began in 1950 and continue to grow today.
Initially housed in the Village Hall basement for approximately 17 years, the Museum was staffed by volunteers and open monthly. The Wilmette Historical Society was formed in 1966 to support the Museum, particularly with fundraising efforts. James A. Williams, chair of the Wilmette Historical Commission, played a key role in establishing the society.
The Museum relocated several times - first to a former police and fire station on Green Bay Road in 1968, then to space in the temporarily closed Highcrest School in 1977. With the school's reopening in 1994, the Museum needed a new home. Fortuitously, the former Gross Point Village Hall at 609 Ridge Road became available, though a developer planned to convert the 1896 structure into condominiums.
Local residents, led by the Junior League and Historical Society, mounted a successful petition campaign to preserve this historic landmark. The Village purchased the property, with one-third of funding coming from the Historical Society, which committed to raising restoration funds. Hundreds of residents contributed generously, enabling restoration work to begin in 1992.
After extensive renovation by architects, craftsmen and specialists, the Museum reopened to the public on April 8, 1995, in its first permanent home. Further expansion occurred with a $1 million capital campaign resulting in a west-side addition opened on September 19, 2004, creating enhanced exhibition space, meeting facilities, research areas, administrative offices, and state-of-the-art collection storage.
