About Us
The Akron Water Supply Bureau meets and exceeds all current United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (OEPA) regulatory requirements with substantial margins of safety.
Water Source Information: Our municipal water comes from three surface water reservoirs that collect from the Upper Cuyahoga River. Wendell R. LaDue Reservoir and East Branch Reservoir in Geauga County store and release water to supplement Lake Rockwell, located in Franklin Township, Portage County, approximately 2.5 miles north of Kent, Ohio.
Water from Lake Rockwell undergoes treatment at the nearby water plant before being pumped eleven miles to Akron through three pressure mains. It's then distributed to over 80,000 households. Since 21% of the service area sits at higher elevations, eight districts require additional pump stations and storage tanks.
Source Water Assessment: While our source water is considered vulnerable to contamination, the Akron Public Water System has consistently treated this water to meet all quality standards. Potential contamination sources include agricultural runoff, failing septic systems, municipal wastewater discharges, and nonpoint sources. The water is also susceptible to contaminants from transportation corridors where roads and railways cross the watershed, and from nearby fuel storage facilities and service areas.
For more information about the source water assessment program, visit www.epa.ohio.gov/ddagw/swap.aspx or contact Akron Water Supply at 1570 Ravenna Road, Kent, OH 44240-6111.
Health Information: Sources of tap water (both municipal and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land or underground, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and can pick up substances from animal or human activities.
Potential contaminants include:
- Microbial contaminants from sewage plants, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
- Inorganic contaminants like salts and metals from natural sources, urban runoff, wastewater discharges, oil/gas production, or farming
- Herbicides and pesticides from agriculture, urban runoff, and residential uses
- Organic chemical contaminants from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, runoff, and septic systems
- Radioactive contaminants from natural sources or from oil/gas production activities
Turbidity: This measures water cloudiness and indicates filtration effectiveness. EPA limits require 0.3 NTU or less in 95% of monthly samples, never exceeding 1 NTU. Akron Water Supply's highest recorded turbidity in 2017 was just 0.12 NTU, with full compliance in all monthly measurements.
