Ohio Water Utility Companies

North Canton City PWS (PWSID# OH-7604312) has prepared this comprehensive report to inform residents about their municipal water quality. This document includes important health information, water testing results, guidance on participating in water decisions, and utility contact information.

Currently, the system serves 7,818 residential accounts and 1,257 commercial accounts for a total of 9,075 water connections. This provides service to approximately 24,400 individuals – 17,488 within city limits and 7,500 in surrounding areas.

North Canton obtains water from nine groundwater wells across five locations. In 2017, the facility averaged 3.05 million gallons per day (MGD) and pumped a total of 1.113 billion gallons. The North Canton Water Plant maintains emergency connections with both Canton Water System and Aqua Ohio Water System of Massillon, though these weren't utilized in 2017.

All water is drawn from the Hidden Valley and Massillon Sandstone Aquifers. While abundant, these sources have been classified as HIGHLY susceptible to contamination due to the thin protective clay layer. Safeguarding our water supply is everyone's responsibility – please dispose of hazardous materials properly and report pollution incidents to authorities.

Additional information is available in the North Canton Water Source Assessment through the Ohio EPA website at http://epa.ohio.gov/ddagw/swap.aspx by selecting "Drinking Water Source Assessment Reports" and searching by our system name or PWS ID: OH7604312.

North Canton City PWS Municipal Water Report Background

North Canton began as a recognized political entity when the Village plat was recorded on February 19, 1831, as New Berlin. Due to anti-German sentiment during World War I, the Village name was changed to North Canton on January 31, 1918. The community was later organized as a city effective January 1, 1962.

The city operates as a home-rule municipal corporation under Ohio state laws. North Canton's current charter, which serves as its municipal constitution, has undergone six amendments since its original adoption on November 8, 1960. State laws take precedence when conflicts exist between the charter and state constitution, or in matters where the charter provides no guidance.

Any amendments to North Canton's charter require majority approval from registered voters within the city limits.

North Canton City PWS Municipal Water Company and CDC

Why is Chlorine added to my tap water?

Chlorine serves as a protective disinfectant that eliminates harmful organisms including bacteria and viruses during the treatment process.

How can I remove the Chlorine taste or odor from my water?

  • Store water in an uncovered container in your refrigerator overnight to allow chlorine to dissipate
  • Bring water to a rolling boil for 5 minutes, then allow it to cool
  • Add a slice of lemon or a few drops of lemon juice to your glass

Can home treatment devices remove Chlorine?

Yes, many home treatment systems can remove chlorine. Once removed, treat the water like any perishable beverage and consume promptly. Follow manufacturer's maintenance instructions to ensure proper water quality.

What causes white or colored deposits on dishes and fixtures?

These deposits are typically calcium carbonate left behind after water evaporation. This mineral content is known as water hardness. White vinegar can help dissolve these deposits. Using commercial water conditioners, liquid detergents, or the "air-dry" setting on dishwashers can reduce calcium carbonate buildup.

Are mineral deposits or hard water harmful?

No, water hardness and resulting deposits don't pose health concerns and may actually provide some health benefits. Our system doesn't treat specifically for hardness.

What is the hardness level in North Canton water?

The water hardness in our system measures approximately 17 grains per gallon (gpg).

Why does my water appear cloudy or milky when first dispensed?

This appearance typically results from tiny trapped air bubbles in the water. Simply allow the water to stand for a few minutes – the air will dissipate leaving clear water.
