About Us
Marietta's water supply comes from seven manufacturing wells situated in a sand and gravel aquifer. Surrounding areas are protected within boundaries approved by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency to alert the public about lands that could potentially introduce contaminants to our water supply through improper chemical use or accidental spills.
These protected zones are clearly marked with signs that include emergency contact information. In 2015, the Ohio EPA updated and approved Marietta's Source Water Protection Plan, classifying our water source as having a HIGH susceptibility to contamination due to several factors:
- Shallow aquifer depth (less than 30 feet below ground)
- Thin protective soil layer above the aquifer
- Previous detection of organic contaminants like PCE
- Presence of significant potential contamination sources in the protection area
Current water quality management includes monthly monitoring of tetrachloroethylene (PCE), continuous pumping and aeration of interceptor wells to remove contaminants, hourly testing, and implementation of Tier 1 water sampling to gather data on source water chemistry. The city also issues boil advisories after water main breaks, conducts hydrant flushing to remove mineral deposits, and replaces lead service lines with plastic pipes during repairs.
Recent infrastructure improvements include main replacements on Greene Street and Colegate Drive (2015), Hadley Lane and Sherry Drive (2016), and major tank maintenance projects including the 676 and Harmar Water Tanks receiving new coating systems and substantial repairs to the 2 M.G. Plant Storage Tank in 2017.
