About Us
Water sources such as tap water and bottled water typically come from rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land or underground, it dissolves natural minerals, sometimes radioactive materials, and can pick up substances from animal or human activities.
Potential contaminants in water sources may include:
- Microbial contaminants
- Inorganic compounds
- Pesticides and herbicides
- Organic chemical contaminants
- Radioactive substances
To ensure safe tap water, the State and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) set regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems. Similarly, the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) and FDA regulate bottled water safety standards.
Auburn's water comes from Owasco Lake, a Class-AA surface water source. The city draws water through a 30-inch intake pipe extending approximately 1,800 feet into the lake. Auburn is permitted to withdraw 15 million gallons daily as authorized by Water Reference Application #422 (10/3/63), with a reliable yield of 48 million gallons based on a 1995 study.
The water treatment system includes:
- Transmission mains from pumping stations to filtration plants
- Two filtration facilities (slow-sand plant built 1916-17 and rapid-sand plant from 1969)
- Pre-treatment with poly-aluminum chloride
- Disinfection using Sodium Hypochlorite
- Storage reservoirs with 15.25 million gallon total capacity
- Zebra mussel prevention system
Auburn's water system serves approximately 28,179 residents through 8,800 service connections. Water is also distributed to surrounding towns and villages, serving an estimated 43,000 people in Cayuga County. In 2017, the system produced 1.433 billion gallons, averaging 3.93 million gallons daily, with a peak day of 4.88 million gallons.
Water quality monitoring identified and repaired 52 system leaks in 2017, preventing approximately 165,000 gallons of daily water loss. Auburn water customers paid $2.60 per 100 cubic feet in 2017, with a minimum quarterly charge of $15.72.
