Water Utility Service Questions

  1. How do I establish water and sewer service?
A new utility application must be submitted within 48 hours of any tenancy change. Failure to apply may result in service disconnection and you'll be responsible for accumulated charges since the last meter reading.
  2. Is a deposit required?
No deposit is needed, but a non-refundable $45 connection fee applies when setting up service.
  3. How is my monthly bill calculated?
Your bill is determined by monthly meter readings and meter size. Residential water has a $14.00 monthly minimum plus 4% state utility tax, which includes 400 cubic feet of water (one cubic foot equals 7.48 gallons). The minimum monthly sewer service charge is $14.00.
  4. When will I receive my first bill?
Your first bill will arrive according to our regular billing cycles, which could be as soon as one week or as long as one month after moving in. A Customer Service representative can provide your specific billing cycle information.
  5. What if I haven't received my bill?
Bills are sent monthly. Contact Customer Service at 256-241-2000 with your service address to determine your billing cycle and dates. If you haven't received your bill by the expected date, please call us.

Water Quality and Treatment

  1. What is fluoride and water fluoridation?
Fluoridation Facts contains answers to common questions about community water fluoridation. Scientific evidence from thousands of peer-reviewed articles supports the safety and effectiveness of proper fluoridation.
  2. Is tap water safe for pets?
Yes, our municipal water is safe for dogs, cats, birds, and most pets. However, fish require special water preparation - chlorine must be removed either by letting water sit with an air bubbler for 24 hours or using a dechlorinating chemical from pet stores.
  3. When is the best time to water my lawn?
Early morning is ideal, when temperatures are cooler and there's less wind. This reduces evaporation and allows grass to dry during the day, preventing harmful mold growth. Evening watering can create conditions favorable for lawn-damaging molds.
