Clayton Municipal Water Company and CDCHow hard is my water and what's my water pressure?
The hardness of Schererville's water typically measures 7.0. Water pressure generally ranges between 45 and 55 psi.
Why do my water smell and taste musty?
Each year, Lake Michigan algae experience growth cycles with peak periods in early spring, mid-summer, and late fall. This creates an unpleasant (but harmless) taste often described as "musty." The proliferation of algae has been linked to zebra mussels in Lake Michigan. These European-native mollusks filter water as they feed, removing particles that increase light penetration and promote algae growth.
When easterly winds prevail, these algae concentrate in the shallow waters near our intake pipes and those of nearby treatment facilities. Rest assured, the water remains completely safe to use, and the taste will normalize when wind patterns shift. Meanwhile, keeping water in an open container in your refrigerator can improve its flavor.
Why does my tap water look cloudy?
During winter months, we receive calls about cloudy water appearance. This is simply AIR and completely harmless. It occurs due to Lake Michigan's temperature. As water travels through underground distribution mains to your home, it gradually warms while remaining under pressure. This pressure forces air to stay dissolved despite exceeding the water's normal capacity.
When you open a tap, the pressure releases and the dissolved air begins to escape. If you observe a glass of this 'cloudy' water, you'll notice it starts clearing from the bottom as bubbles rise and dissipate. Upon close inspection, these tiny bubbles are visible. Once the cloudiness disappears, the water is perfectly clear with no residue at the bottom—confirming it's merely air.
What are the white particles sometimes found in my faucet aerators?
A growing issue across America involves residential water heater dip tubes made from inferior polymer plastic. These tubes deteriorate within tanks, causing hot-water shortages and introducing white plastic debris into household plumbing systems. When homeowners discover these particles floating in water or clogging aerators, they often mistakenly contact their water company, assuming it originates from the municipal supply rather than within their homes. The Schererville Water Department suggests consulting a licensed plumber to address this issue.
