When You Turn on Your Tap, Consider the Source

The water utilized by this system comes from surface water at Graham-Mebane Lake, located at 3218 Bason Rd, Mebane, NC 27302.

Source Water Assessment Program (SWAP) Results

North Carolina's Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Public Water Supply (PWS) Section conducted assessments for all water sources across the state. These evaluations aimed to determine each water supply's vulnerability to Potential Contaminant Sources (PCSs). Assessment results are available in SWAP Reports featuring maps, background information, and susceptibility ratings (Higher, Moderate or Lower).

The susceptibility rating for City of Graham was calculated by combining the contaminant rating (number and location of PCSs in the assessment area) with the inherent vulnerability score (characteristics of the watershed and assessment area).

Have Mosquito-Borne Viruses Been Detected in Our Area?

Mosquitoes collected from multiple traps across the city are tested weekly by the County Public Health Department for West Nile Virus and Saint Louis Encephalitis Virus. During 2018, four positive mosquito tests for West Nile Virus were identified.

  1. Week of Aug. 6: Location at 151 Bear Creek Pkwy. W with ground spraying on Aug. 9 & 10
  2. Week of Sept. 3: Locations at 540 Keller-Smithfield and 8700 Davis Blvd. with ground spraying on Sept. 5 & 6
  3. Week of Sept. 17: Location at 7000 Shady Grove Road with ground spraying on Sept. 19 & 20

How Will Residents Be Notified of Human Cases?

As part of our Mosquito Abatement Program, we coordinate with the County Public Health Department to alert residents of any confirmed mosquito-borne illness cases within city limits. Notifications appear on the city's website and social media accounts when mosquitoes test positive or human cases are confirmed.

What Preventive Measures Is The City Taking?

The city follows guidelines from the County Public Health Department regarding ground spraying, typically treating within a half-mile radius of any trap where mosquitoes test positive for viruses.

Our contractor uses environmentally responsible water-based insecticides that provide low toxicity, minimal odor, rapid biodegradation, and high mosquito mortality. Spraying typically occurs between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. when mosquitoes are active and winds are calm.
