Municipal Water Utility Company FAQ

For more information on your municipal water, visit the U.S. CDC:
City of Rocky Mount Municipal Water Company and CDCHow do I turn off water to my home?
Most shut-off valves are located in the home's utility room, typically near the water heater and after the water meter. To close the valve, whether it's a wheel or lever type, rotate it clockwise (to the right).
Why does my water smell or taste unpleasant?
First determine if the issue affects one tap or all faucets. Run water for several minutes to see if this resolves the problem. If the issue continues, contact the District to schedule an appointment with the Water Department.
Why does my water look cloudy or milky?
This typically results from air in the waterline. Air can enter when there are issues with interior plumbing or during water system maintenance in your area. Running the water usually clears its appearance. Contact the District if the problem persists.
What should my water pressure be?
Typical water pressure in the District ranges between 40-60 pounds. Pressure regulators can impact your water pressure and occasionally fail, resulting in low pressure. Contact the District with any pressure concerns.
Why is there low pressure in just one faucet?
You may have a clogged aerator. Unscrew the aerator at the faucet end and clean any accumulated debris.
Why isn't there enough pressure for my sprinkler system?
For existing systems with no prior issues, schedule an appointment with the Water Department. For new systems, check if you have a pressure regulator and ensure it's properly adjusted. You might need to modify the number of zones operating simultaneously.
What setting is recommended for my water softener?
Generally, a setting of 16 to 17 is recommended. For Cross Connection FAQs, please refer to the PDF available on our website.
