The City of Gastonia was established in 1877, following the completion of reconstruction. Gastonia's early development began in 1873 as a small railroad depot, driven by the convergence of the Atlanta and Charlotte Airline Railroad (now Norfolk Southern) and the Chester and Lenoir Narrow Gauge Railroad (now CSX), along with the introduction of steam-powered textile manufacturing.
This railway intersection and the emergence of the textile industry created opportunities for commercial and public growth. Initially, the town had approximately 200 residents and covered less than one square mile. The original population reflected the surrounding region's demographics, consisting primarily of English, German, Scotch Highlander, and Scotch-Irish citizens, with a small number of African American residents settling in the community.
Designated as the county seat in 1911, today's Gastonia boasts over 72,000 residents and spans approximately 51.7 square miles. It stands as the largest of Gaston County's 15 municipalities and serves as the economic engine of the region. Gastonia ranks among North Carolina's 15 largest cities and has operated continuously under the Council-Manager form of government since its adoption in 1919.

Complete the online Letter of Intent with as many details as you currently have available. We'll review it with the location you're interested in and respond as promptly as possible.

Once we receive your letter of intent, approve your filming request, and confirm proper insurance coverage, a location agreement/permit can be prepared and sent to you within 48 hours. Before filming begins, we require the signed notarized agreement, proof of adequate insurance, and full payment.
You don't need a county permit for non-county properties, but we appreciate being informed about when and where you plan to film – we like to track filming activity in Westchester.
