King City is a welcoming and tight-knit community of 14,221 residents, strategically positioned in the beautiful southern Salinas Valley of California's Central Coast in Monterey County. Located 155 miles south of San Francisco and 277 miles north of Los Angeles, the city offers convenient access to all regions of California.
Serving as a gateway to nearby Pinnacles National Park, Monterey County wine region, a thriving agricultural area, U.S. Army Garrison Fort Hunter Liggett, and a region rich in history immortalized in John Steinbeck's writings, King City features scenic mountain vistas, tree-lined streets and a charming historical downtown area.
While maintaining its small-town charm, King City provides numerous amenities including a state-of-the-art hospital, green space with swimming complex, municipal airport, community college satellite campus, two school districts with five schools, local newspaper and radio station, performing arts center, hotels, campground, and various parks and sports facilities. Within city limits, you'll find well-maintained residential, commercial and industrial areas.
King City hosts the Salinas Valley Fairgrounds and annual Salinas Valley Fair, along with other community events including a weekly Farmer's Market and annual Christmas and Fourth of July parades. The City of King operates under a Council-Manager government with a 5-member City Council elected by districts to 4-year staggered terms. It provides comprehensive services including police, fire, community development, recreation, public works and wastewater management.
Additional agencies with facilities in King City include King City High School and Union School Districts, Department of Motor Vehicles, Highway Patrol, County Sheriff's Department, Cal Fire, National Forest Service, and King City Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture. Incorporated in 1911 as "City of King," it remains a charter city named after pioneer Charles H. King, who purchased 13,000 acres of Spanish land grant to establish King Ranch. His successful crops attracted the railroad's attention, and in July 1886, Southern Pacific completed rail lines to what became known as "King's Station."
