We're pleased to share this year's Annual Municipal Water Quality Report with you. This document reflects the water quality data from the 2017 calendar year. Here you'll find important details about your water sources, what your water contains, and how it compares to regulatory standards.

Our ongoing mission is to provide you with safe, reliable municipal water. We want you to understand the efforts we make to continually improve the water treatment process and protect our valuable water resources. We remain committed to ensuring the quality of your water and providing this information because informed customers are our best allies.

If you have questions about this report or your municipal water service, please contact David Bracken at 336-349-1070. We value our customers and want you to be well-informed about your municipal utility.

Your municipal water comes from surface water sources including rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, and reservoirs. As water travels over land or through the ground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive materials. It can also pick up substances from animal presence or human activity.

Potential contaminants in source water include:

  • Microbial contaminants like viruses and bacteria from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
  • Inorganic contaminants such as salts and metals that occur naturally or result from urban runoff, industrial discharges, or farming
  • Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban runoff, and residential uses
  • Organic chemical contaminants including synthetic and volatile organics from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, and septic systems
  • Radioactive contaminants that occur naturally or result from oil and gas production and mining

The EPA establishes regulations that limit contaminant levels in public water systems to ensure tap water is safe to drink. Similarly, the FDA sets limits for contaminants in bottled water to provide equivalent protection for public health.

When you turn on your tap, the water comes from Lake Reidsville, located at 278 Reid Lake Road, Reidsville, NC 27320.

City of Reidsville Municipal Water Report Info
The origins of Reidsville trace back to the mid-1800s when William Wright established a tavern and store along the road connecting Danville, VA and Salem. This settlement, known as Wright's Cross Roads, was the earliest community in what would become Reidsville and was managed by Wright's son, Nathan, and later his son-in-law, Robert Payne Richardson. Richardson's residence, constructed in 1842 overlooking Little Troublesome Creek, remains standing on Richardson Drive and holds the distinction of being the oldest house in the city.

In May 1814, Reuben Reid relocated his family to a 700-acre farm between Wolf Island and Little Troublesome creeks. Reid became a successful farmer, operated a store and public inn, and served as a constable and justice of the peace. When the community established a post office named Reidsville in 1829, Reid's 16-year-old son David became its first postmaster. David Reid later served as a State Senator (1835-42), U.S. Congressman (1843-47), Governor of North Carolina (1850), and U.S. Senator (1854).

On November 26, 1858, William Lindsey of Pittsylvania County, Virginia purchased a 384-acre tract known as Reidsville at auction. He and his bride, Sarah Holderby, moved into the frame house Reuben Reid had built opposite his store—now a historic landmark as the first frame house in town.

Located near the center of Rockingham County with the Southern Railroad running through its center, Reidsville was incorporated by the State Legislature in 1873. For many years, tobacco was the cornerstone of the local economy, with the city's history closely tied to American Tobacco Company. Following American Tobacco's sale in 1994, community leaders diversified the local economy, establishing Reidsville as a forward-looking community where residents "Live Simply. Think Big."
