We are proud to present this year's Annual Municipal Water Quality Report, which provides a snapshot of last year's water quality data. This report includes information about your water sources, what they contain, and how they compare to regulatory standards.

The North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Public Water Supply (PWS) Section conducts Source Water Assessment Program (SWAP) evaluations for all municipal water sources in North Carolina. These assessments determine each source's vulnerability to Potential Contaminant Sources (PCSs) and provide susceptibility ratings of Higher, Moderate, or Lower.
Washington's water comes from the Castle Hayne Aquifer. We've established eight wells that pump groundwater to our Regional Water Treatment Plant near Douglas Cross Roads Community. At the plant, we treat raw water to remove odors, iron, manganese, and hardness through aeration, potassium permanganate oxidation, and filtration. About 65% of the water passes through resin filters to remove calcium and magnesium (hardness), then blends with untreated water for optimal hardness levels (60-75 mg/l).
We add chlorine as a disinfectant, phosphate to protect pipelines from corrosion, and fluoride (0.75 mg/l) to help prevent childhood cavities. Treated water is stored in 2.5-million-gallon tanks at the plant, then pumped to three elevated storage tanks in Washington that hold 1.3 million gallons. Ammonia is added during this process, creating chloramines for disinfection.
Some Washington customers receive water from both the City of Washington and Beaufort County Southside Water System, particularly those in the Industrial Park and along Market Street Extension. The Beaufort County system draws from six wells tapping the Castle Hayne and Pee Dee Aquifers, located along Hwy 33 East and Old Sandhill Road.
