Greenville Utilities Comm. Municipal Water Company and CDCI think I might have a water leak! How can I check?
- First, follow the quick guide to test your water meter.
- Inspect all toilets by adding food coloring to the tank, wait without flushing for several hours, and check if color appears in the bowl - this indicates a leak.
- Examine all fixtures installed after your water meter.
Even a small constant water flow (1/32" diameter) at normal pressure (60 psi) can waste approximately 18,500 gallons per quarter. You can request an AWA service technician inspection, though they aren't plumbers and cannot make repairs to anything except AWA systems.
I have no water! What should I do?
- Test toilets using the food coloring method described above.
- Check your main valve by the meter to ensure it's completely open.
- Ask neighbors if they have water service.
- Contact Customer Service (724-266-4847) for assistance.
My water appears dirty/rusty/discolored! What's happening?
Water quality changes whenever the distribution system experiences disturbances, including:
- Water main breaks
- Fire hydrant use during emergencies
- Unauthorized hydrant use (like construction companies filling tankers)
- Power outages affecting pump operation
- Emergency repairs by AWA
- Scheduled maintenance (AWA typically provides advance notice)
My clothes are stained from the water! What can I do?
- Stop using water immediately when you notice quality issues.
- Keep affected laundry damp until water quality improves.
- DO NOT USE CHLORINE BLEACH! It reacts with stains, making them harder to remove.
- Soak stained items in non-chlorine stain remover and water (duration depends on stain severity).
- After soaking, run through a washing cycle with detergent and additional non-chlorine bleach.
