Conover purchases its water from the City of Hickory, which treats surface water from Lake Hickory on the Catawba River. Conover owns a three million gallon daily capacity and currently utilizes approximately 1.58 million gallons per day, serving roughly 5,658 customers. The city manages its own distribution system, including approximately 150 kilometers of water lines and two one-million gallon elevated storage tanks. Test results presented represent data from both Conover and Hickory's water systems.
The North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) conducted assessments for all drinking water sources through the Source Water Assessment Program (SWAP). These evaluations determined each water source's susceptibility to Potential Contaminant Sources, with ratings of Higher, Moderate or Lower based on contaminant ratings and inherent vulnerability characteristics.
