The City of Mount Airy's municipal water meets all Federal and State requirements. Here's what you should know:

Water, including bottled varieties, naturally contains small amounts of some contaminants. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, contact the Environmental Protection Agency's Safe Municipal Water Hotline (800-426-4791).

Certain populations may be more vulnerable to water contaminants than others. Those with compromised immune systems—including cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS, elderly individuals, and infants—should seek advice from healthcare providers about their water consumption. The EPA/CDC provides guidelines for reducing Cryptosporidium and microbial contamination risks through their Safe Water Hotline.

Elevated lead levels can cause serious health complications, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead primarily enters municipal water through service lines and household plumbing materials. While Mount Airy provides quality water, they cannot control the materials used in home plumbing systems. To minimize lead exposure, flush your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for consumption when it has been sitting for several hours.

Mount Airy operates two surface water treatment facilities. The F.G. Doggett Facility on Doggett Water Plant Road draws from Stewarts Creek, while the H.L. Spencer Facility on Orchard Street utilizes Lovills Creek. Both underwent major upgrades between 1991-1995 and continuously implement the latest water treatment technologies to ensure high-quality municipal water for residents.
